Today, 15th of October has happened again, people from all over the world have gathered again to express their disagreement and indignation towards this system. Here in Finland we have heard also the echoes of Democracia Real Ya movement. Hundreds of people have gathered in Kamppi, Helsinki, to protest against a system that doesn’t seem to listen no other than big corporations, markets and speculators.

Finlandia podría no tener tantos motivos para estar “indignada”, tiene una economía bastante más equilibrada que la española y puede presumir de ser uno de los países menos corruptos del mundo. Sin embargo no escapa a los problemas globales de la crisis y, aunque a mucha menor escala que España, también sufre el desempleo.

Finland could have less reasons to be “indignant”, it has an economy much more well-balanced than Spain has and can be proud of being one of the least  corrupt countries in the world. Nevertheless, it doesn’t escape to the global crisis problems and, although at a much smaller scale, it also suffers from unemployment.

En la concetración de hoy hemos escuchado a varias personas manifestar sus puntos de vista sobre la situación. Aunque no nos hemos enterado de mucho, ya que casi siempre hablaban en finlandés, sí que hemos oído alusiones a España  y a Democracia Real Ya. Es además ya un distintivo de estas protestas el característico movimiento de manos para expresar acuerdo o disconformidad con lo que dice.

In today’s concentration we have heard many people expressing their points of view about the situation. Although we didn’t grab much because almost everything was in Finnish, we did hear allusions to Spain and Democracia Real Ya. It is also an emblem of these protests the typical hand’s movement to express agreement or disagreement.

Entre tanto finlandés, nos ha llamado la atención oir a un chico español que ha comentado en inglés la situación vivida en España desde que comenzó el movimiento. Su discurso ha sido bastante aplaudido y al menos, esto sí lo hemos entendido.

Among so much Finnish, it has surprised us to hear a Spanish boy speaking about the situation in Spain since the begining of the movement. His speech has been much applauded and at least this one we did understand it!

Hemos obervado pancartas reivindicativas -también en inglés-, y se habían montado algunas casetas recogiendo firmas o informando sobre determinados temas. Al comienzo de la concetración se estaba repartiendo sopa caliente entre los asistentes, no dudo que sentaría genial en una mañana con apenas 8 grados. Nos ha llamado la atención ver al menos una tienda de campaña, nos sabemos si aguantará toda la noche ahí…

We have noticed vindicated banners -also in English- and several stands collecting signatures or informing about different issues. At the begining of the concentration hot soup was delivered among those present, it must have felt really good in a morning with only 8 degres!.  It has also grabbed our attention to see at least one tent, we don’t know if it will stay during the night…

Esperemos que esto siga adelante y no se transforme en un movimiento violento, que es lo que muchos quieren. Hay mucho que decir todavía pero sobre todo mucho que escuchar por parte de los que gobiernan…

Let’s hope this continues and doesn’t turn into a violent movement, something that many want. There is still much to say but  above all much to listen for the ones that govern us…

Tras la debacle bancaria y caída consecuente de los mercados -causada por la irresponsabilidad y avaricia de los bancos-  ¿qué nos queda?, ¿cuáles han sido las consecuencias?, o mejor, ¿quiénes son los que verdaderamente han pagado el pato?

Los bancos han reconocido su error pero no han obtenido su merecido castigo. En cierto momento se llegó a hablar de que había que renovar la economía mundial, de que el sistema capitalista necesitaba ciertos ajustes (en palabras de Barak Obama e incluso Rodríguez Zapatero, si no recuerdo mal) pero mucho me temo que todo sigue igual y los errores se volverán a repetir. Qué gran verdad aquella de “el ser humano es el único animal que tropieza dos veces (y más) sobre la misma piedra”. Desgraciadamente, seremos nosotros los que pagaremos el pato por muchos años, los ciudadanos, que NADA teníamos que ver con la dichosa crisis.

Si algo bueno tienen estas situaciones es que ayudan a sanear la economía de los países. De esta manera, las empresas o entidades que no estaban haciendo bien las cosas desaparecen en favor de aquellas que optan por nuevas vías (se supone, mejores a las anteriores). Sin embargo, ¿qué clase de saneamiento económico vamos a tener si los gobiernos ayudan a salir del atolladero a aquellos que deberían caer por los errores cometidos?, ¿cómo podemos permitir que se financie con dinero público a empresas privadas, a bancos y cajas que operan al margen del Estado? Los mismos que cuando las cuentas salen bien hacen todo tipo de artimañas para escapar al control gubernamental, pero eso sí, cuando llegan las vacas flacas le piden ayuda al papi Estado.

Todo sea por salvar la ECONOMÍA de los países. Pero ¿se traduce acaso el buen funcionamiento de los mercados y de los bancos en beneficio para los ciudadanos?. Por mucho que esa sea la idea que transmiten los medios de comunicación, es rontundamente falso. Los mercados operan para ellos, para su propio beneficio, si por algún casual eso redunda en un aumento de los puestos de trabajo  es pura casualidad, no por que ellos lo quieran así (tened por seguro que si se pueden ahorrar esos puestos lo harán).  Es el Estado el que regula y controla la actividad de las empresas para equilibrar la balanza y que esto no sea la ley de la selva, en teoría… Cada vez más esa balanza se inclina en favor de las corporaciones y de los poderosos económicos. La presión es grande, no nos engañemos, los que mueven los hilos y “gobiernan” de verdad son los mercados. ¿Qué papel real juega el Estado?, ¿hasta dónde llega su control? y por ende, ¿cuánto cuenta la opinión de los ciudadanos…? Eso daría para otro artículo.

La economía española adolece de muchas cosas. Los anteriores años de bonanza no eran sino un espejismo creado a golpe de ladrillo y playa. Pero desgraciadamente, el sol y la pala no van a situar a este país a la cabeza del avance tecnológico, industrial o de cualquier tipo, ni van a conseguir que sea autónomo a la hora de crear riqueza y desarrollo. Con una tasa de desempleo anómala en un pais “primermundista” (20’2%)  -similar a la de Mozambique o Sudán-, con un fraude fiscal de 16.000 millones -somos el tercer país europeo con mayor economía sumergida por detrás de Italia y Grecia (el 65% del dinero que circula en España está en billetes de 500)-. Con una desigualdad económica que sólo está por detrás de Portugal en la UE-15. Con el 63% de la población mileurista o algo peor, siendo los altos directivos en España los mejores pagados de Europa. Además somos el único país de entre los 30 más prósperos del mundo cuyo salario medio real no creció en los años de bonanza económica (1995-2006), mientras que los beneficios empresariales crecieron un 73%.

Así nos va y para colmo, la reciente reforma de las pensiones no hace sino meter más el dedo en la llaga. Si para muchos ya era un dolor de cabeza no encontrar trabajo, ahora se suma la presión de saber que tienen que cotizar 38 años para obtener la pensión completa en su jubilación. Sinceramente a mi no me salen las cuentas. Una gran mayoría de  jóvenes no conseguirán llegar a cobrar una pensión completa (a no ser que estén hasta los 70 o más). Es curioso que un gobierno “socialista” haya adoptado una medida tan “neoliberal”, pero ¿habría sido distinto de haber estado otro en el poder? ¿acaso el PP habría tenido más clemencia con el pueblo…?

Ante tal panorama, me cuesta creer que en este país no se hayan producido ya protestas masivas contra estas reformas, que están recortando derechos sociales larga y duramente conseguidos por nuestros abuel@s. O bien estamos dormidos, alelados o bien pensamos que no se puede conseguir nada. Pues no hay mas que mirar lo que han conseguido en Egipto o lo que consiguieron en Islandia.

Esta es la única manera que tiene el pueblo de expresar su rechazo a algo. Desde aquí hago un llamamiento para convocar una manifestación en contra de la reforma de las pensiones y por una reforma laboral que contemple de verdad las necesidades de los ciudadanos y haga frente a esta crisis.

Es hora de moverse, de salir a las calles a reivindicar lo que es nuestro. ¡Que nos oigan y se den cuenta que no pueden hacer lo que quieran y mirar para otro lado!

Their name reminds us of a famous album by Slayer but their music has nothing to do with it. Diabulus in Musica consists of four young musicians from Pamplona (Spain) that in 2006 decided to create a new symphonic metal project. Together with Niobeth represent the new wave of Spanish gothic metal with operatic voice, that although it hasn’t got much acceptance in this country -at least, for the moment-, for sure deserves a worthy heed.

Y es que su demo “Secrets”, adelanto de lo que será su primer disco homónimo, destila talento por los cuatro costados. Un sonido a la vez oscuro, moderno, rimbombante, sinfónico envuelve sus canciones de un aura muy especial.
El primer corte de esta demo comienza con unos majestuosos coros acompañados por potentes guitarras que dan paso a la suave voz de Zuberoa, opuesta radicalmente a la de sus compañeros Adrián o Gorka, quien también da vida a los teclados. “St Michael’s Nightmare” desprende bastante versatilidad por sus constantes cambios, juegos de melodías, y variedad de intensidades: aplastantes riffs guitarrístiscos se entremezclan con partes en las solo figuran la dulce voz de Zuberoa y el piano.
El siguiente corte “Nocturnal flowers” es más digerible que su antecesor. Destaca por tener un sonido más moderno y cercano a bandas de metal gótico actualmente en boga. Los teclados cobran fuerza y el estribillo es más accesible.

“Lies In Your Heart” posee intensas guitarras pero también poderosos coros, todo ello aderezado por la siempre cálida voz de la cantante. La última canción, “Ishtar” comienza con un triste y oscuro violín, que poco a poco se va viendo acompañado por más intrumentos que van añadiendo intensidad. Los rugidos cobran mayor protagonismo esta vez. Un buen tema para cerrar que recuerda a los primeros After Forever.
Tanto su música como estética presentan todos los ingredientes claves de una banda de metal sinfónico, en este sentido no ofrecen ninguna innovación en lo que a sonido se refiere. Harán por ello, las delicias de los seguidores de este género.

Para su disco debut cuentan con la colaboración de numerosos músicos de prestigio entre los que se encuentran la soprano Maite Itoiz (John Kelly & Maite Itoiz), el tenor Ariel Hernández (integrante del Coro Nacional) o Sergio Ramírez (violinista para RTVE y Belén Arjona). Además han conseguido que se fije en ellos Ad Sluijter, ex guitarrista de la banda holandesa Epica, quien ha producido junto con Iñaki Llarena (el productor del grupo) el disco, y que nada menos que el prestigioso productor Sascha Paeth les masterize album. Veremos de lo que son capaces estos jóvenes.

Their demo “Secrets”, advance of what will be their first album, shows much talent. A dark, modern, bombastic and symphonic sound wraps their songs up with an unique aura. The first song that opens the demo begins with a majestic choir accompanied by powerful guitars that gives way to the soft voice of Zuberoa, opposite to the Adrián or Gorka growls. “St. Michael’s Nightmare” gives off a lot of versatililty with its constant changes: powerfull guitars, soft piano parts… “Nocturnal Flowers” is much more approachable than its predecessor. It stands out for having a modern sound closer to the actual gothic metal bands. Keyboards gather power and the chorus is more accessible.

“Lies In Your Heart” has intense guitars but also mighty choirs, accompanied by the always warm voice of the singer. The last song , “Ishtar” begins with a sad and dark violin that little by little is followed by more instruments that gather intensity. The growls are more present. A good song to close that reminds to the After Forever’s first works.
Diabulus In Musica’s music has all the important ingredients of a symphonic metal band, in this sense they do not bring any innovation to the scene. They will be welcome by all the fans of this genre.
For their debut album, they count on many prestigious musicians as soprano Maite Itoiz (John Kelly & Maite Itoiz), tenor Ariel Hernández (singer of the Spanish National Choir) or Sergio Ramírez (violinist in the Spanish National Broadcast) among others. Besides, they have achieved the support of Ad Sluijter (ex guitar player of the dutch band Epica), who has worked with Iñaki Llarena (DIM’s producer so far) in the production of the album, and the invaluable expertise of Sascha Paeth in the mastering of the album.

Hypatia of Alexandria: distinguished Greek thinker and philosopher, a woman with huge virtues that, nevertheless, was about to be drowned by the voracious History. Her deserved recognition was never measured up until a few time ago and that was because of a film…History matters.

Hipatia tuvo que ser una mujer con una valentía y entereza admirables, para poder imponerse en un mundo dominado por hombres y  sacudido por frecuentes revueltas religiosas. A pesar de todo, logró brillar como nadie. Su vida, tengo que reconocer que, como muchos, la conocí hace poco y fue gracias a la película de Amenábar “Ágora”, que recomiendo desde aquí a TODO el mundo. La película y, por ende, su apasionante historia reúnen una serie de elementos, a mi juicio, de lo más acertado para sacar a la palestra en los tiempos que corren. Creo sinceramente que Amenábar no podría haber escogido algo mejor.

Hypatia had to be a woman with such bravery and fortitude that could impose herserf over a world dominated by men and affected by frecuent religious revolts. But in spite of everything, she managed to bright like nobody. Her life, I have to admit that, like many, was unknown to me until I saw the Amenábar film “Agora”, which I recommend to everybody. The film, and therefore, its exciting story have a series of elements that, in my opinion, are the most appropriate to be pointed out in these days. I seriously think that Amenábar couldn’t have chosen something better.

Pero adentrémonos un poco más en la historia de esta peculiar mujer. Hipatia nació en Alejandría en torno al 355 d.C. Le tocó vivir una época de cambios, convulsiones, en la que la anterior brillante y espléndida civilización clásica daba paso a una nueva época dominada por el cristianismo: la Edad Media. Hija del célebre astrónomo Teón, fue educada en el neoplatonismo y se especializó en los saberes de la astronomía y las matemáticas, pero además cosechó la filosofía, la mecánica, la oratoria, la historia de las religiones, la música… Es la primera mujer científica de la que se tiene conocimiento. Dejó una profunda huella en la época que la tocó vivir gracias a sus incontables conocimientos, tratados, inventos, y teorías que desarrolló, los cuales, desgraciadamente,  se perdieron en el transcurso de la Historia, aunque gracias a sus discípulos hemos podido conocer en parte.

But let’s go deeper into the story of this peculiar woman. Hypatia was born in Alexandria around 335. She had to live in a time of changes, unrest, and in which the before brilliant and splendid classical civilization gave now way to a new world ruled by christianity: The Middle Ages. She was the daughter of Theon, a very well-known astronomer and was educated into neoplatonism. She specialized in mathematics and astronomy but she also studied philosophy, mechanics, oratory, religion’s history, music… She is the first scientific woman we have knowledge about. She left an important imprint due to her huge knowledge, treaties, inventions, and theories she developed, which, unfortunately, have been lost in the course of History, though thanks to her disciples we have known it in part.

Fue una magnífica profesora y enseñó filosofía en su casa a un selecto grupo de aristócratas que más tarde ocuparían altos cargos en la sociedad. Entre ellos se encontraban Sinesio de Cirene o el futuro prefecto imperial de Egipto Orestes. Todos sus discípulos desarrollaron una profunda admiración y devoción hacia su mentora, que se refleja en frases como esta, en la que Sinesio se refería a ella como “madre, hermana y profesora, además de benefactora y todo cuanto sea honrado tanto de nombre como de hecho”.

She was an excellent teacher of philosophy, which she taught in her house to a select group of aristocrats that later on would hold high positions on society. Among them were Synesius of Cyrene or the future egipcian Imperial Prefect Orestes. All of her disciples developed a profound admiration and devotion to her, that is shown in phrases like this, in which Synesius refers to her as a “mother, sister and teacher, as well as benefactor and everything which is honored by name and by fact”.

Fue miembro y líder de la Escuela neoplatónica de Alejandría y escribió tratados sobre geometría, álgebra y astronomía. Cartografió diversos cuerpos celestes y confeccionó un planisferio. También fue ducha en conomientos prácticos y mejoró el diseño de los primitivos astrolabios, inventó un hidrómetro para determinar el peso específico de los líquidos y se la supone inventora del aerómetro, un instrumento que mide las propiedades físicas del aire u otros gases.

She was member and leader of the Neoplatonist School of Alexandria and wrote treaties about geometry, algebra and astronomy. She charted some celestial bodies and made a planisphere. She was also versed in practical knowledges and improved the design of the primitive astrolabs, invented a hydrometer, used to determine the relative density and gravity of liquids, and supposedly as well an aerometer.

Una mujer así difícilmente se dejaría llevar por los nuevos vientos de cambio que traían, entre otras cosas, una nueva religión. Se mantuvo siempre fiel a sus convicciones y fue esto lo que le costó una de las muertes más crueles. Su pecado fue profesar el paganismo en una época en la que los cristianos pasaron de ser perseguidos a ser perseguidores. Mientras que el imperio romano veía sus ultimos días de esplendor, el cristianismo se hacía cada vez más fuerte en Alejandría, barriendo a su paso toda creencia que no fuera esa. Esto recuerda mucho a algo ¿verdad?, en el fondo el ser humano es cruel, mezquino, rencoroso, y nunca ha sabido perdonar (acto que curiosamente alaban la mayoría de las religiones). La realidad nos demuestra que cuando el débil tiene oportunidad de machacar al anteriormente fuerte lo hace, no importa lo que haya vivido, ni lo mucho que haya condenado las acciones que una vez sus opositores cometieron contra él, se vengará de la misma manera que fue vilipendiado. Y esto lo hemos visto muchas veces y lo vemos en la actualidad. Es la ley del péndulo, que gobierna la Historia desde tiempos inmemoriales, hemos de reconocer que nos repetimos, y mucho.

A woman like this could be unlikely swept away by the new winds of change that brought, between other things, a new religion. She kept herserf loyal to her convictions and this caused her one the cruellest deaths. Her sin was professing paganism in a time in which christians transformed from being persecuted to persecute. Meanwhile the roman empire was enduring its last hegemonic days, christianity became stronger in Alexandria, sweeping away every belief different to this one. This resembles very much to something, isn’t it? Deep down human beings are cruel, mean, resentful and have never learnt to forgive (something which curiously is very praised in almost every religion). History shows us that when the weak has the chance to beat the before strong, he does, no matter what he had gone through or how much he had condemned the acts that once his opponent commited against him, he will take revenge the same way he was vilified. And we have seen this many times throughout History and we are seeing now. It is the pendulum law, which rules the world since inmmemorial times, we have to admit we repeat ourselves very much.

La pobre Hipatia fue una víctima más del radical fanatismo religioso y de la incomprensión de un mundo que se le quedaba a la altura de los talones. El patriarca Cirilo de Alejandría, quien por cierto es considerado santo y fue proclamado doctor de la Iglesia por el Papa León XIII, guardaba un recelo especial hacia la filósofa, que gozaba de gran prestigio entre la alta sociedad egipcia. Para Cirilo, Hipatia representaba una gran amenaza a su creciente poder y su gran influencia en la sociedad podía desestabilizar las cosas. Una mujer segura de sus convicciones, soltera e inteligente no era lo común en la época.

Poor Hypatia was a victim of the most radical religious fanaticism and of the incomprehension of a world that was far beyond her wisdom. Cyril I, Pope of Alexandria, who is also saint and Doctor of the Church, kept great resentment towards Hypatia, who enjoyed an excellent reputation and prestige between egyptian high society. To Cyril, the philopher represented a huge threat to his rising power and her influence could destabilized community. A self-confident, single and intelligent woman wasn’t very common in that period.

Su final no pudo ser más dramático: una horda de fanáticos cristianos la atacaron cuando volvía a casa en su carruaje, la golpearon y la llevaron a rastras por toda la ciudad hasta llegar al Cesáreo, templo edificado por Augusto. Allí, tras desnudarla, la lincharon con tejas y la descuartizaron, para después pasear sus restos por la ciudad en señal de triunfo. Posteriormente llevaron lo quedaba de ella al Cinareo, un crematorio, para incinerarla.

Her end couldn’t have been more brutal: a mob of fanatic christians attacked her while she was coming back to her home in her chariot. They beat her and dragged her along the city until they got to the Caesarion, a great church built by Augustus. There she was stripped naked and inhumanly butchered with tiles. Then they cut her body up into pieces and carried the remains to the Cinaron, where what was left of her was burnt.

Semejante acto solo cabe en la mente de personas totalmente perturbadas, radicalizadas y absorvidas completamente por la religión. Son aquellos que no ven más allá de sus narices y cuya incultura es probablemente del mismo tamaño que su sinrazón. Es lo que hoy llamamos extremismos religiosos y que seguramente nuestra mente relacione con el Islam, debido a la actuación de los medios de comunicación. Pues más vale que nos miremos un poco más el ombligo, porque comportamientos radicales religiosos no solo hay que buscarlos en Asia o en Oriente Medio, sino en algunos de los países más poderosos del mundo y en teoría más avanzados mentalmente.

Such a sadictic act could only be bred in the minds of totally disturbed people, who are completely absorbed by religion. They are the ones who don’t see beyond the tip of their noses and whose ignorance is probably the same size as their unreasonableness. It is what nowadays is called religious extremisms and what in our minds is probably linked to Islam, thanks to the job of the mass media. Well, we’d better look to ourselves because radical religious behaviors are not only in Asia or Middle East but in the most powerfull countries of the world and, in theory, the most mentally advanced.

La historia de Hipatia refleja como ninguna el origen de todo, el límite entre la razón y la sinrazón, la incultura, el radicalismo religioso, el miedo irracional, aún patente en muchos hombres, a que una mujer sea más lista y poderosa que ellos, el por qué del cristianismo y de la estupidez humana. Seguiremos conviviendo con ello, no os quepa la menor duda.

Hypatia’s story shows better than any the origin of everything, the limits within reason and unreasonableness, ignorance, religious radicalism, irrational fear, still present in many men, to women who can be cleverer and more powerful than they, the reason of christianism and human stupidity. We will continue like that, don’t doubt about that.

Defiende tu derecho a pensar, porque incluso pensar de manera errónea es mejor que no pensar…

Jacque Fresco is a peculiar guy. Every definition isn’t up to describe the huge career he has developed through the years. Engineer, futurist, philosopher, architect, industrial designer, writer…, but, above all, he thinks ahead of his time. He has been all his life working to solve the problems that affect our society: hunger, poverty, pollution, social injustice, inequality… and that is the root and the aim of the Venus Project, which intends to create a new fairer and more logical world.

Sus inventos para este nuevo mundo pasan por ciudades circulares que se retroalimentan, robots y sistemas automatizados inteligentes que pueden realizar nuestros trabajos, medios de transporte no contaminantes, edificios completamente revolucionarios… y no solo eso, sino que ha creado un nuevo tipo de sistema económico: un sistema basado en los recursos naturales, en vez del dinero, si si, lo que leéis.

Os invito a que os adentréis más profundamente en este nuevo mundo que plantea este geniecillo, ya que esto es sólo un pequeño atisbo de lo que se está gestando en Venus, Florida, EEUU. Próximamente saldrá un reportaje mío en la revista Enigmas más extenso, os mantendré informados.

Circular cities, industrial robots, new ways of transportation, automated construction systems, revolutionary buildings and even a new kind of economic system based on natural resources, are some of his inventions. I invite you to go deeper into this new and fantastic world that is now taking shape in Venus, Florida(U.S.). This is an interview I made to Jacque Fresco on may 2009 for a magazine’s article that was published on “Enigmas”. I hope you enjoy it.

1. Are we living the right moment (because of the crisis) to undertake The Venus Project?

A. It will take a crisis to enable people to look for an alternative direction. It is our job at this time to get as much information as possible out to the public, about this direction. It is up to what others do to help bring this about.

2. How would be everyday life under a Resource Based System? What will people do?

A. Monotonous and dangerous jobs will inevitably be phased out by new advancing technology. People in a resource-based economy will be given the opportunity to study, travel, work to help others, design, create, etc. – or work in the arts or sciences – if they desire. I find it so sad when people ask, “What will people do?”. Their mind has been so repressed and misinformed that they have no other options in their lives other than a job and in most instances it is one that they do not even like. Children, when they are young, are curious about everything and if nurtured they could have a much greater range of interests and abilities. Our present day culture does a wonderful job of limiting peoples’ interests, opportunities, and abilities. People are not born that way anymore than they are born with bigotry, hatred, prejudice, or with particular values. It is the environment that shapes people and if the culture is not altered there will be little change in human behavior.

3. If machines take over all the jobs, does it mean that nobody would work? Who would supervise machines if they fail? Are machines perfect? What would happen if a storm destroys all the harvest of a specific area?

A. Boring and monotonous jobs would be eliminated as quickly as possible by machines. Enabling people to work on what they would like to do. There is so much work to be done and knowledge to be gained on problems that confront us all, like heart disease, cystic fibrosis, the threat of hurricanes and tsunamis, etc.

Machines can be operated automatically by feedback from the environment.

Machines are not perfect, but in defense of machines, perhaps we would be better off if people behaved more like them. There is no question that some machines are poorly designed, but the flawed natures of human beings in high places surpass, by far, the illusion of the destructiveness of machines. There is no evidence of machines acting against human being on their own accord, except in naïve science fiction stories. Humans program machines and direct their use. It’s not machines that are to be feared, it is the misuse and misdirection of these machines that threaten humankind. Machines are not the danger, we are. As long as we fail to take responsibility for our relationship to our fellow human beings and the intelligent management of our planetary resources, we remain the greatest danger to our planet.

We can store, in advance, many materials and food in case of emergencies.

4. There are some kind of professions very difficult or impossible to carry out by machines, like psychologist, teacher, artist, lawyer, judge… What will happen with this? Are these jobs still going to exist?

A. People can’t imagine it, but even psychologists, teachers, artists, lawyers and judges can be surpassed by machines. Within a resource based economy, lawyers and judges would no longer exist. Also, many of the conditions that lead people to seek psychologists would be outgrown. And, children would be taught how to search out the needs of their own problems, where to look for answers. They would have a much better understanding of the world, which would remove the need for others to help them adjust to the world around them.

5. In the cities you have design, everything has its assigned space: the dome, the buildings surrounding the central dome, the houses… What will happen is some of these areas grow?

A. Then new cities will be built.

6. What is the purpose of going to university if people are not going to work in what they study?

A. The cities in the future would be university cities. People would be learning and studying their entire lives. The culture would be an emergent culture that is continuously exploring, growing, and changing, as opposed to the society we have today, which is an established culture. Our society is fixed and tends to keep things the way they are.

7. If people don’t work, how will the society progress or evolve?

A. Work is a limiting factor in terms of progress and evolving. The thing that flattens out incentive the most is a minimum wage job. People dare not dream today because they cannot afford their dreams. In a resource based society, where goods and services are available to all, this also includes the ability to learn, explore and experience new possibilities in science, technology and the arts. Progress wouldn’t be held back by patents, or the market place, or devious and manipulative behavior, which is the result of competition, artificial scarcity, or planned obsolescence.

8. Has someone been interested in buying or patent some of your prefabricated houses or buildings? Are you planning to market some of your inventions?

A. When I was younger, I designed hundreds of products, houses, medical devices, aircraft, boats, automobiles, etc. However, even though many of them were of higher quality in terms of using less resources and were made to last longer, this did not mean that it would always get to the market place. I now realize that it is not products that will help change the destructiveness and suffering of our culture, but we need an entirely new social design and value system so that everyone can participate in invention, allowing each person to contribute to society freely, with items that will help eliminate scarcity, homelessness, poverty, war, and unnecessary human suffering.

9. How will you use the “memory metals” in the future society? Could these metals revolutionize our life?

A. Memory materials, not just metals, could be used in many different ways, from furniture design, clothing, to medical devices, to architecture, which would make it possible for buildings to self-erect and repair themselves.

10. How would you set in motion a Resource Based Economy and How will the society manage the tremendous change?

A. The Venus Project cannot be put into practice on a global scale until the economic systems of the world fail to provide for the needs of people and citizens become disillusioned with their elected leaders.

All systems continue to undergo modification and change by sheer technological evolution. For example, a traffic cop replaced by electronic lights, the ice men by refrigerators, elevator operators by automation, aircraft by guided missiles or drones.

What will bring about the collapse of the world’s monetary systems is the infusion of automation and the outsourcing of jobs. This includes not only assembly line workers but also doctors, engineers, architects, and the like. As workers and professionals lose their purchasing power, the industries that depend on them can no longer function. This will bring an end to the monetary system. It is not a question of owners giving up their industries so much as the fact that people will not have the purchasing power to sustain this system. Even the motion picture industry is generating computerized people who will replace many TV announcers and personalities.

This change is already well underway on a global scale.

While these drastic conditions will help produce the motivation for social change, no individual or organization has laid out what changes are necessary and how to bring them about. Our current system is not working. Unless people are aware of, or knowledgeable about what is needed, they will continue to repeat the same mistakes–war, recession, boom and bust, hunger, poverty, and much unnecessary human suffering.

The aims of The Venus Project cannot be achieved until people become aware of its proposals and aims. To introduce to the world this new social direction, the best vehicle is a major motion picture. It will present simply and understandably the advantages to all nations of participating in a resource-based economy. The film we would like to do will be both entertaining and educational. It would present the limitless possibilities of an evolving society which surpasses politics, poverty, money, and war.

A major film could reach the largest number of people the world over in the shortest possible time. We feel it is necessary to produce this motion picture in advance of the social breakdown to help prepare people for this transition and present them with a direction to work toward. There is a lot of work to be done. We hope enough people will become aware of the proposals of The Venus Project before social collapse so that this new social design may be implemented.

Another way to visualize and accelerate an understanding of this bold new vision is with a TV series.

Therefore, our main objective is education through the media. If enough people learn about this direction, accept these proposals, and wish to organize to bring it about, we will then work toward the building of a first experimental city. The Venus Project has designs and blueprints for a prototype community.

11. Is this the best system created until now?

A. Socialism, Communism, Free-enterprise system, and Fascism are integral parts of social evolution but have all failed to meet the needs of the people and the environment. A global resource based system would use the methods of science for the benefit of the entire world population, while focusing on the reclamation of the environment to as near a natural state as possible.

This does not require convincing everyone, just those who are in positions to help initiate the change. This would not be an elitist group but those who understand the benefits are for everyone. This is the best we know up to now, as we realize all things are subject to change.

This would be a quantum jump in the way we conduct human affairs. If we fail to accept responsibility for our own future, we will repeat the same mistakes over and over again as history shows.

A nation without a vision for the future is bound to be passed by those nations that do.

The other day I saw the last Zeitgeist documentary: Zeitgeist Addendum. I had already seen the first one and the truth is that it surprised me a lot.  Now the second one goes beyond and proposes a new economic system…I won’t say more, I prefer people to see it without any preconceived ideas. I think it is a documentary everybody should see and whether you agree or not, it’s always interesting to know different ideas and points of view about things. It might infuriates some but once in a while you should stop and think what you believe and why you believe it, without pressures.

Recomiendo desde aquí ver estos documentales con la mente clara, sin que la ideología nuble la razón, pero sin que el espíritu crítico desaparezca por completo, que sirva al menos de reflexión sobre los muchos errores que se han cometido a lo largo de la historia y se siguen cometiendo.

Fervientemente católico y protector con los suyos, pero descendiente de un pasado familiar poco consecuente con la rectitud y unidad de la que alardeaban los suyos. Puede sorprender, pero Franco fue abandonado por su padre.

He was a passionate catholic and overprotective with his family and loved ones, but descendant of a familiar past very different from the rectitude and unity that was boasted by his followers. You could be surprised  but Franco was abandoned by his father.

Francisco Franco Bahamonde nació un 4 de diciembre de 1892 en Ferrol, en el seno de una familia un tanto peculiar. Su padre, Nicolás Franco Salgado Araújo, capitán de marina de ideas liberales, era mujeriego y bebedor. Su madre, Pilar Bahamonde Pardo, en cambio, era muy tradicionalista y fervientemente católica, cualidades que heredaría su hijo Francisco. Tenía cuatro hermanos: Nicolás, Pacita, Pilar y Ramón, con los que mantuvo una buena relación a pesar de las diferencias ideológicas que le distanciaban de alguno de ellos. Sin embargo, con su padre la relación fue nula, puesto que éste abandonó a su familia cuando fue trasladado a Madrid y allí comenzó una nueva vida con una señorita llamada Agustina Aldana. En consecuencia, Franco se apegó a su madre y desarrolló una gran repulsa hacia él, que además era mutua. Nicolás nunca creyó en las posibilidades de su hijo y cuando éste llegó al poder, se distanció y criticó la actividad desarrollada por el régimen. Quizá fue el único que pudo hacerlo sin que la soga pendiera sobre su cabeza.

Francisco Franco Bahamonde was born on 4th december 1892 in Ferrol, Galicia, within a peculiar family. His father, Nicolás Franco Salgado Araújo, was a womanizer and heavy drinker navy captain with liberal ideas. His mother, instead, was very traditionalist and passionate catholic, both characteristics that would appear in Franco. He had four brothers and sisters: Nicolás, Pacita, Pilar y Ramón, with whom he kept good relationship even though some  of them had very different ideological ideas from his. However, the relationship with his father was nonexistent, since he abandoned his family when he moved to Madrid. There he began a new life with another woman called Agustina Aldana. Therefore , Franco became very devoted to his mother whereas he developed great wrath towards his father, which besides, was mutual. Nicolás never believed in the possibilities of his son and when Franco took over the power, he criticized the activity developed by Franco’s regime. He might was the only person at that time who could make that criticism without feeling the threat of a hanging  rope over his neck.

Queda muy poco para que llegue la Navidad pero ya vemos en muchos lugares árboles navideños adornando fachadas, interiores o decorando las gélidas calles madrileñas. Sin embargo, poca gente se para a pensar en los orígenes de esta remota tradición. A más de uno le sorprenderá saber que tan cristiana costumbre tiene unos comienzos bien paganos.

La tradición del árbol de Navidad proviene de las religiones paganas que practicaban los celtíberos del norte de Europa. Al llegar el aniversario del nacimiento del dios Frey, dios del sol y la fertilidad, que coincidía con las fechas en que los cristianos celebran la navidad, adornaban un árbol de hoja perenne que venía llamarse “Yggdrasil”, que simbolizaba el árbol del Universo. En su copa se encontraba el “Asgard”, el cielo o la morada de los dioses, y el “Valhalla”, la fortaleza de Odín a la que iban a parar los valerosos guerreros nórdicos cuando morían heroicamente en combate, y abajo, en las raíces, estaban los infiernos  o “Helheim”. Con la llegada de los cristianos al norte de Europa, se trasladó esta tradición a su ámbito religioso y el árbol pasó a representar algo muy distinto. Se cuenta que san Bonifacio, evangelizador de Alemania, tomó un hacha y cortó un árbol que representaba al “Yggdrasil” y lo sustituyó por un pino que pasó a simbolizar el amor de Dios. Después lo adornó con manzanas y velas. Las primeras representaban el pecado original y las tentaciones, y las segundas la luz de Jesucristo. Con el paso del tiempo las manzanas y las velas se han convertido en bolas y otro tipo de adornos, que ya ni se pudren ni se apagan, por que son tan perennes como el árbol y la propia Navidad.

Margaretha Geertruida Zelle

Su turbulenta vida comenzó en la ciudad de Leeuwarden, Holanda, un 7 de agosto de 1876. Su padre era sombrerero y su madre, de descendencia javanesa, murió cuando ella contaba con solo 6 años. Muy pronto comenzó a sentir atracción hacia los militares y en 1895 respondió a un anuncio de contactos que solicitaba esposa. Fue así como conoció a Rudolf John McLeod, un oficial holandés con quien se casó a los 19 años. Con él se fue a vivir a Java, lugar al que estaba destinado, pero al poco tiempo comenzaron las desgracias. En 1899 su hijo mayor murió presuntamente envenenado y las desavenencias con su marido, al que acusó de borracho y violento, hicieron inevitable el divorcio. Tras esto volvió a Europa y se estableció en París en 1903, donde comenzó a trabajar como bailarina erótica y cortesana. El éxito no tardó en emerger. Gracias a sus rasgos exóticos se hizo pasar por princesa javanesa y empezó a utilizar el nombre de Mata Hari (“Ojo del amanecer”). Sus actuaciones le llevaron también a España, donde debutó en el music-hall Central-Kursaal y en el castizo teatro Alhambra en 1906, logrando el mismo reconocimiento que en el resto de Europa. En 1914 estalló la guerra, momento en el que se encontraba actuando en París. Su gran atractivo le convirtió pronto en el instrumento idóneo de importantes militares que buscaban desesperadamente información del enemigo. Era el caso de Kraemer, pero también del oficial ruso Vadim Masslov, quien se cree que fue el único hombre al que la bailarina realmente amó. Ese amor le llevó a hacerse espía doble y ofrecerse a Francia al mismo tiempo, una arriesgada decisión. Así, se ofreció en París al capitán Ladoux, jefe del contraespionaje francés, que la encargó espiar al embajador alemán en Madrid, quien sin embargo, nunca se llegó a fiar del todo de ella. El 14 de febrero de 1917 fue detenida en un hotel de París. Se la acusó de espionaje, de ser una agente doble para Alemania y de causar la muerte de miles de soldados. Pero el juicio, que solo duró un día, destacó por su poca seriedad y solvencia, ya que se la declaró culpable sin pruebas concluyentes y con hipótesis no probadas. Todo hace pensar que fue utilizada por Francia como excusa por el pésimo desarrollo de los acontecimientos en la última etapa de la guerra. Fue ejecutada por un pelotón de fusilamiento el 15 de octubre de 1917.
